The Chaps are going for two.
The Westlake tennis team advanced four players to the upcoming state championships with top showing at Wednesday’s regional finals.
Fernanda Contreras edged Meredith Hopson 6-4, 6-2 in the girls singles championship, and both players are moving on to state – most likely a first in Westlake history, according to coach Kim Riley.
“It’s a good day when Westlake is playing Westlake,” Riley said of the all-Chap finale of Contreras vs. Hopson. “Out of eight at state two are from Westlake, that’s amazing. Big kudos to those girls.”
Furthermore, Casey Sutton will be going for her second state title in mixed doubles after she paired up with Nemo Niess to win the regional title Wednesday. Sutton won state last year with Ryan Meek as her teammate.
“They did great,” Riley said. “We beat them two weeks ago at a Westwood tournament so we felt pretty good about that.
Sophomore Charles Tan ran into a tough draw in his second match and was knocked out short of qualifying for state.
“We got five out of district and four are going on to state,” Riley said. “He’s a sophomore, so we’ve got time.”
