The Westlake boys golf team won the Marvin Dameron Invitational over the best teams in Region II Feb. 15-16.
The tournament is nicknamed the Regional Preview because all of the best teams in the region participate in the event as preparation for regionals in April. The Chaps battled high winds and cold temperatures on Day 1 and put up a good score of 313 in those conditions.
Day 2 was less windy and Westlake was able to post a 300, which was good enough for a one-shot win over Jesuit.
Going into this tournament, Westlake was ranked No. 4 the state with Lake Travis and The Woodlands ranked third and second, respectively.
“I’m very proud of the effort of these five boys because day one was about mental toughness, patience, and being able to get up and down due to the wind making it so difficult to hit greens in regulation,” Westlake boys golf coach Callan Nokes said.
In the individual division, Stratton Nolen tied for low medalist with scores of 77 and 71, marking the second tournament in a row Nolen has won in the individual division. He had four birdies on the back nine and shot a 34 to lead the Chaps to the win.
Tyler Gammill put together two very solid rounds of 76 and 75 to finish in the top five individually as well. Andy Germann shot 78-78, Robert Rickard had a 84-76 and Garrett Lynch shot 82-82.
Westlake has another big tournament this weekend at Morris Williams in Austin that will feature the top 20 teams in the state Feb. 22-23.
