Two dozen Westlake swimmers are setting off for the regional championships this weekend in Houston after both Chaparral teams took the District 15-5A titles handily.
Neither team left any doubt as the boys side won the championship by nearly 60 points while the girls cleared second-place Lake Travis by almost 50 points in the district meet held Jan. 25-26.
The girls squad qualified 14 girls – individually and as part of relay teams – to compete in the regional meet and the boys have 10 swimmers headed to the University of Houston this weekend.
“We’re pretty strong as a team,” Westlake swim coach Isaac Grombacher said. “But we’re not exactly sure how [regionals] will go because it’s a new region for us.”
As the regional championship wraps up Saturday, the Chaparral swimmers still won’t know exactly where they stand as results will still be filtering in from other regional races around the state.
Grombacher is expecting quite a few of his swimmers to advance on to state – such as Mackenzie Franklin, Zach Thomas, Wes Thomas, Audie Embestro, Ben Ussery as well as the girls 400 relay and 200 medley relay and the boys 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, among others.
It’ll all depend on how the times shake out Saturday.
“[The boys relay teams] have the talent to get there they just haven’t quite done it yet,” Grombacher said. “We just want to come away with our best time; that’s really all we can ask for.”
Girls team qualifiers for the regional meet are Alyssa Woltemath, Laurie Prinz, Margaret Beck, Mackenzie Franklin, Mina Glenesk, Taylor Flaherty, Magda Contreras, Alec Marshman, Bayley Wiltshire, Emily Sweet, Anne Shedlosky, Maddy Hunt, Bryanna Hundt and Taylor Flaherty.
Boys team qualifiers for the regional meet are Audie Embestro, Zach Thomas, Ben Ussery, JC Engel, Wes Thomas, JD Doyal, Hayden Southworth, Andre Newlands, Nick Carlson and Brock Jones.
