Although they have already graduated from Westlake, three Chaparrals got to suit up and play on the Westlake diamond one last time last week.
Kathy Dzienkowski, Clara Navarro and Rosie Maddox were selected to play in the Austin Area All-Star Game held June 13 at Westlake. Though their South team lost 7-1 to the North squad, everyone was still in good spirits after the annual game that featured some of the best senior talent in the area.
Most of the scoring came early as the North side picked up two runs in the first inning and poured on four more in the second for a quick 6-0 advantage.
The South team didn’t score until the final frame, pushing across one run in the seventh with a double by Lindsey Hood (Smithson Valley) and an RBI double by Marisa Castillo (Austin High).
All three Chaparrals got into the game, with Maddox reaching base in the fifth inning and Navarro getting an at-bat in the fourth.
“I enjoyed being a part of the all-star game,” Maddox said. “It was pretty laid back and a fun way to end my softball career. I enjoyed playing and getting to know new people as well as spending my last game with two of my teammates, who I’ve spent the last four years of varsity with.”
Dzienkowski said nearly everyone associated with the team, including herself, grew up going to every all-star game held at Westlake and more. She relished getting on her home diamond one last time before heading off to play at Dartmouth. She played five innings and had one hit in two at-bats.
“It was so fun; I’ve been wanting to play in that game my whole life,” she said. “I’ve been going ever since I was little and it started. Especially to play on the Westlake field, it was really fun. I’ll never get to go back again. We didn’t win, but we had a lot of fun doing it.”
