The Westlake swim team plans to leave its opponents hanging out to dry this weekend.

With their sights set on a top finish on both the boys and girls side, the Chaps head to the District 15-5A meet this weekend at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center, intent on advancing the bulk of its swimmers to the regional meet.

Heading into district, Westlake has a couple of swimmers that will likely make it all the way to the state meet in Paul Corbae and Mackenzie Franklin.

“We should be in pretty good shape, and there are probably a lot of events where we should be first,” coach Isaac Grombacher said. “If we don’t win both sides, it’ll be sort of a disappointing meet and will mean something happened — disqualifications or something, other schools could have someone come out of nowhere.”

While Corbet made the state meet a year ago, Franklin is vying for her first appearance, and there are a few other Chaps that have a shot to make the state championships as well, such as David Cox, Mattias Glenesk and Laurie Prinz.

“A few others are really knocking on the door, but it’s a matter of in a few weeks from now down in Houston (at regionals), how do they do?” Gromacher said. “There’s a lot of potential there. We’ll know after this weekend who is likely to hit and who is not.”

Though there hasn’t been a school meet since just before Thanksgiving, the teams have been practicing and even swimming in club meets all the while.

“David’s been right on the edge for years now,” Grombacher said. “I’ll be shocked if this year he doesn’t break through and make it to state. But it’s not just how he does, but how every other kid in the state does. Lori went five seconds faster than I’ve ever seen her in a school meet  [at a club meet this weekend], so hopefully Friday and Saturday, she’ll do that again.”

The District 15-5A competitors are Anderson, Austin High, Bowie and Westlake. The district swim meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Texas swim center. The meet should start at 9:20 a.m. Friday and 12:20 p.m. Saturday, with diving set for 9:30 a.m. Friday. For race times and more information, visit  the team’s site at westlakeswimming.com.

The Region 4 championship is Feb. 10-11 at The Woodlands, and the top two swimmers in each regional event will be invited to compete in the state meet back in Austin Feb. 24 & 25 at UT.

Among those competing this weekend are Wes Thomas, Ben Ussery, Audie Embresto, Zack Thomas, Anne Shedlosky, Alissa Woltemath, Irena Martinez, Mina Glenesk, Olivia Muehlberger and Bayley Wiltshire.
